How to Remove Common Carpet Stains

Carpets bring warmth, comfort, and character to a home – but they also attract life’s little mishaps. From muddy footprints to coffee spills, stains happen. The good news? Most marks can be lifted with the right technique, and the quicker you act, the better the outcome.

Before reaching for any cleaning product, take a moment to identify two key things:

  1. Your carpet fibre, because every material reacts differently.

  2. How long the stain has been sitting, as older stains take more effort to shift.

Synthetic carpets like polypropylene and polyester tend to repel stains naturally, making them fairly forgiving. Nylon, on the other hand, absorbs spills more easily. Wool and wool-blend carpets are durable and beautiful, but they require gentler cleaning and should never be treated with heat.

The Universal Stain-Removal Process

No matter what you’re dealing with, start with the basics:

  • Lift any solids carefully, working from the outside inward so the mess doesn’t spread.

  • Blot—never scrub. Use a clean white cloth or kitchen roll and gently dab the area.

  • Apply a specialist carpet cleaner suitable for your fibre type to the cloth, not directly to the carpet.

  • Patch test the cleaner somewhere discreet before using it on the stain.

  • Once the stain begins to lift, blot with plain water to remove leftover product.

  • Dry thoroughly and brush the pile in one direction so it blends in with the surrounding carpet.

  • Vacuum once everything is dry.

Follow this process each time to remove both the stain and any lingering odours.

Tricky Stains: What to Do

Burn Marks

Small singes on wool carpets can sometimes be rescued by lightly buffing the charred fibres with a coin. Larger burns, or damage on synthetic carpets, may require a professional repair or patching.

Paint Spills

For wet paint, scoop up as much as possible straight away. Synthetic carpets respond well to blotting with a dry-cleaning solvent, while wool carpets should be treated carefully with a dab of white spirit. Always work slowly to avoid spreading the stain.

Blood

Start by lifting as much as you can with a cloth. Cooling the area with ice in a plastic bag helps the stain harden slightly, making it easier to scrape away. Follow with gentle blotting using cold water.

Red Wine

Act fast—blot, blot, blot. Once you’ve lifted as much pigment as possible, rinse with fresh water and repeat until your cloth comes away clear. Restore the pile once dry.

Sick / Vomit

Remove solids with a spoon, then blot. A pet or enzyme-based cleaner works best here, especially for lingering smells. Wool carpets need extra care, so keep your blotting gentle.

Tea & Coffee

Treat these the same way: blot, apply the correct spot cleaner, then rinse with water. Both drinks contain tannins, so the quicker you respond, the better your results.

Shoe Polish

This is one of the toughest stains. If vacuuming doesn’t remove the loose residue, it’s usually time to call a professional.
